Central Sleep Apnea: absence of breathing AND breathing effort for 10 seconds or more, on multiple occasions, during sleep

Nonhypercapnic
Cheyne-Stokes Respirations: crescendo-decresendo pattern of breathing during sleep; a type of central sleep apnea/hypopnea. Seen in CHF and less frequently in stroke. Treatment is to maximize CHF treatment, positive pressure ventilation, and supplemental oxygen.
Hypercapnic
Obesity-hypoventilation syndrome (Pickwickian Syndrome): BMI greater than 30, leads to hypoventilation during waking hours, CO2 retention, increased PaCO2 during sleep and decreased PaO2 during sleep
