NW Describing and Measuring Motion Mind Map
How do you know you are moving? if you've traveled on a train buildings look like they are moving when you actually are the one moving.
Describing motion
Deciding if an object is moving isn't always easy for example if your sitting in a chair your still moving by breathing.
Reference Points
A Reference Point is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion.
Relative Motion
Motion Depends on your point of reference
Measuring Distance
You can use units of measurement to describe motion precisely. The system of measurement is called International System of Units.
Calculating Speed
If you know the distance of an object travels in a certain amount of time, you can calculate the speed of the object.
The Speed Equation
To calculate the speed of an object divide the distance the object travels by the amount of time it takes to travel that distance.
Instantaneous Speed
Instantaneous Speed is the rate at which an object is moving at any given time.
Average Speed
To calculate the average speed, Divide the total distance traveled by the total time.
Describing Velocity
When you know both the speed and direction of an objects motion, you know the velocity of the object.
Graphing motion
You can show the motion of an object on a line graph in which you plot distance vs time.
Calculating Slope
You can calulate the slope of an line bi dividing the rise by the run.
Different Slopes
Most moving objects do not travel at a constant speed.
