Levels of analysis in urban geography- the character of urban environments is the outcome of the interplay of a host of private and public interests operating at a variety of geographical scales. The neighbourhood- local decline or revitalisation, residential segregation, levels of service provision. The city- centres of economic production and consumption, role in different scale of economy, distribution of power in the city. The national system of cities- successive right governments focused on national economic development irrespective of the consequences for growth and decline of urban areas, increased competitiveness to attract investment. The world system of cities- reflects growing interdependence of nations and cities with the global political economy. World cities, niche advanced producer services, relationship between the production and re-production of urban environments, the global and the local as two sides of the same coin. The process of globalisation underscores the need for urban geographers to employ a multi-level interdisciplinary perspective in the search for urban explanation.
