Why did Britain want Egypt
Trade
The Suez Canal
This meant that merchants no longer went around Africa so Cape Colony suffered and the British economy started to collapse
The Canal gave Merchants and Naval boats a direct path from Europe the Asia that was 6,000 miles shorter
American Civil War
American farmers were no longer making cotton as they were fighting the civil war. This meant that there was a demand for cotton. Egypt was known for it's high quality cotton.
Strategy
The French
The French had put considerable investment into the Suez Canal. The British did not want to be second to the French.
If Britain had control of Egypt they would be able to control the waters around it which would give them great sea power
Other Factors
Moral
Christian misisonaries wanted to spread Christianity throughout the world, and if Britain had control of Egypt it would be easier to spread Christianity through North Africa
Imperialism
Many people in Britain believed that they were the superior race and that Britain should take control of as many countries as possible because Britain would be the saviour of the world
Minerals
The Nile flooded every year which meant that the soil around the Nile was very fertile
Egypt had plenty of artefacts to be 'discovered' and sold
Egypt would have had plenty of Gold and diamond mines
