Post Cold War Changes
Africa
Social: Rapid population growth has led to disease and pollution in many African countries. AIDs is especially a major concern in countries such as Uganda who fight to combat the disease killing millions.
Political: A tendency in multi-party elections has begun For instance, in Senegal elections ended the rule of the once dominant socialist party.
Economic: In Cote d’Ivoire civil war has damaged their economy and increased poverty. Many banks and businesses have closed.
East Asia
Social:Major issues with population remain in China. Due to the growing population, a one-child rule was put in place to control the population but life expectancy is still increasing.
Political: South Korea has begun to experience a growing democracy and has replaced military leaders with civilian leaders who better represent the people.
Economic: In China a new agriculture policy was put in place that allowed peasants to make a profit from extra food they farmed after paying rent, this policy promoted a more free market and began to shy away from communism. The country’s output of industry increased, poverty decreased, and China’s per capita rose.
Middle East
Social: Iran is under control of Muslims clerics who limit the rights of women and withhold the right to free assembly and freedom of the press. All protests are oppressed and combated with violence.
Political: Young people in Tunisia and Egypt have both led protests against their oppressive governments and have been successful in their push to get rid of their corrupt leaders.
Economic: Due to the Unstable governments throughout the region in countries such as Iraq, many countries in the middle east suffer from poverty and unemployment.
North America
Political: The United States government switched back and forth from right to left as the country focused on economics after the cold war. Presidents since the cold war include, Bush, Reagan,Clinton, and Obama.
Social: Some women in the United States want to still follow original gender roles however many want to be able to work and receive the same pay as men. Women still take care of children and stay at home in many families and issues with equal pay still remain.
Economic:The Reagan Administration brought record deficits for the U.S, the total deficit was tripled during Reagan's time from 1981 to 1987 and resulted in an economic downturn.
Western Europe
Political: In 1990 East and West Germany were reunified and the Berlin wall was taken down. The reunification of these countries led to a more democratic Germany.
Social: Tensions in France grew against foreign-born residents, especially between the Muslim population and the rest of the French population.
Economy: After the reunification Germany suffered high unemployment rates which led to many unhappy citizens.
Eastern Europe
Social: Glasnost allowed the people of the Soviet union to openly discuss issues with government officials in order to improve the country.
Political: In Czechoslovakia the communist government fell but soon old ethnic conflicts arose between croatians and slovaks. In order to solve this Czechoslovakia split into the Czech republic and Slovakia, both countries prospered with their new governments.
Economic: Gorbachev believed that it was time for the Soviet Union to go through reforms based on Perestroika. He worked to get rid of communism and bring forward a more free market economy.
South/Central America
Political: Latin America has begun to trend toward left-wing governments with the election of officials such as Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Many of these Latin American country push for democratic freedoms.
Social: Mexico has become a dangerous home to much drug violence. The drug war in Mexico rages on as even poor young teens are used to traffic drugs into America.
Economic: Many countries in South America have actually begun to overcome poverty and even have experienced economic growth. Countries such as Brazil and Chile have increased trade and expanded the middle class.
South/Southeast Asia
Political: In India new political parties have competed against the Congress party for control of the region. Eventually the Congress party returned to power and focused on economic growth and reforms in rural areas.
Social: India and Pakistan continue to face conflict due to religious disputes between Muslims and Hindus over territory.
Economic: The economic reforms put in place ny Manmohan Singh have proven effective. India is moving towards a market based economy which is growing at exponential rates and is projected to possibly even be the world's third largest economy.
