End of Cold War
Western Europe
Social changes: A big social change was the tear down of the Berlin Wall. This symbolized the reunification of Germany. But in other parts of Western Europe, like France, there were social conflicts between the Muslims and the rest of the French population.
Economic changes: In Germany, Helmut Kohl was forced to raise the taxes. This basically led to the collapse of the economy in Germany. It also led to high unemployment rates.
Political changes: In Western Europe, communism ended and the social democrats returned to power. The European Union was formed and put the euro into place as the country's currency. The government also organized the federal reserve.
Eastern Europe
Social changes: Many countries split into different divisions but it really benefited the countries. In Poland, Lech Walesa created Solidarity which is an organized national trade union.
Political changes: All of the countries in the Soviet Union split and gained independence. Communism was destroyed. Many countries, like Russia, quickly elected a president.
Economic changes: The free market economy was what worsened the previous economy in countries like Russia. Russia's economy started to improve because of Vladmir Putin who reformed the economy. Russia also joined the World Trade Organization.
South/Central America
Social changes: Poverty is still a very big issue. There are also violent drug wars in Latin America that involve different gangs. But in different parts of this region, like Brazil, there have been increased trading and education has been improving.
Economic changes: There is still a large gap between rich and poor and poverty is a problem. But Chile is trying to put the money they have to good use. Chile is using revenue from copper resources to fund programs for women and children.
Political changes: Many countries have shifted to a democracy. There have also been civil wars so people are trying to free themselves from that. Lastly, now that countries are democracies, citizens are trying to gain democratic freedoms in Latin America.
North America
Social changes: In the U.S. there was a setback in the women's movement. Some women did not mind returning to original gender roles that society gave them. There have been improvements since this has happened though. Also, popular culture has become known. This means that American culture has taken over other parts of the country.
Economic changes: When Ronald Reagan was in office, he was the cause of a large budget deficit. His vice president, George Bush, became president but he could not handle the budget deficit properly. This made it easier for Bill Clinton to be elected and he later improved the economy but his presidency came to an end because of presidential misconduct.
Political changes: There have been many changes in presidency. When Clinton came into office, he had a "new form of democrat" that favored certain Republican policies. Also, when Barack Obama came into office, he was the first African American president. He passed a national healthcare legislation.
Middle East
Social changes: There are still social conflicts going on. There is a civil war between the Shia Muslims and the Sunni Muslims. There have also been conflicts between the Israelis and the Palestinians. A peace agreement between them has failed because of terrorism and fights over territory.
Economic changes: In the Middle East, poverty rates are still very high. A lot of young people are unemployed. There is also poor education which could be an effect of poverty.
Political changes: In the Middle East, the government enforces strict Islamic law. They limit a lot of the peoples' basic rights. People are protesting the government and trying to change the way they live.
South and Southeast Asia
Social changes: New reforms are being put into place that include things like public works projects and hot lunch programs for kids. But there are also negatives like the rising conflict between the Hindus and the Muslims.
Economic changes: Economic reforms have improved the economy. India is moving toward a market based economy. This country is now a rising economic superpower.
Political changes: Currently, the Congress party is leading India. But there has been political instability because of tension and conflict between the Hindus and the Muslims.
East Asia
Social changes: In China, there is rapid population growth. To control the population they adopted the one-child policy. Another effect of the rapid growth is low salaries and low income.
Economic changes: Different parts of East Asia are in different economic situations. China is turning into an economic superpower. But Japan is falling into an economic slump that is leading to slow economic growth.
Political changes: The government in China has sent students to study abroad to learn about science and technology. Communism is still strong in China. In Korea, the north is a dictatorship and the south is a democracy.
Africa
Social changes: In the south, there has been rapid population growth. AIDS and HIV have spread quickly. These diseases are starting to spread globally.
Economic changes: Because of the population growth, poverty is still wide spread. To change this economy, it will be a very slow process. The African Union was made to help solve economic problems throughout the country.
Political changes: In the north, the president uses brutal force and citizens protest. But they are now beginning free elections. The people are working for a new beginning. In the south, they are working toward political stability but some parts of the region still have civil war or dictatorships.
