      - Encomienda was a system used by the Spanish to teach the indigenous Spanish and to convert them to Catholicism. This practice enslaved the people and banished the rituals of human sacrifice. Unfortunately, encomienda also put an end to the culture and religion of the Aztecs and Incas. #

The Spaniards may have completed their goal of encomienda, wealth and gaining control of Tenochtitlan, but the way they achieved that was horrific and unnecessary.

    - - The Spaniards soon invaded the city, capturing Cuauhtémoc in the process; who was later hanged. This was noted as the end of the Aztec empire.
      - The Aztecs were cut off from the chinampas, food and water supplies and their population quickly began to diminish. Along with the famine, smallpox still consumed the city and the Aztecs had very few troops to protect them.
      - Hernán Cortés had 13 brigantines (warships) launched into Lake Texcoco, and blockaded the causeways leading to the city, thus putting Tenochtitlan under siege. #
      - The Spaniards escaped their hideout in the temple and searched for new allies in the surrounding tribes; Tlaxcala, Texcoco, and others. The new emperor Cuauhtémoc, attempted to ally himself with the Spanish in the hopes of a peaceful solution, but his wishes were denied and Cuauhtémoc was soon wiped out by a smallpox epidemic just eighty days into his rule.
      - Hernán Cortés then attempted to parlay with Moctezuma II and the Aztecs, but the Aztecs no longer respected Moctezuma II for welcoming the enemy. Soon Moctezuma is found dead and the Spanish recorded his death by stoning from the Aztecs, but the Aztecs claim that he was killed by the Spanish.
      - During a religious festival, the Spanish attacked and killed many nobles and priests. The Aztecs then revolted and forced the Spanish into hiding inside a temple.
