To Be Like: Affinity-Seeking and Politeness Strategies
Everyone tries to change themselves so that they are liked more by those around them, good ways to go about doing this is to try and be nicer to everyone around you, try to be helpful, and actually listen to those around you. Just generally treat others the way you want to be treated and you should be fine.
To Be Believed: Credibility Strategies
People like to know that you are credible when it comes to things that you say that you can do/are. You might mention that you went to a tech school when talking to someone about a computer problem, in order to assure them that you are not just some run of the mill person, that you have some weight in what you are trying to do or say.
To Excuse Failure: Self-Handicapping Strategies
Sometimes when you go to do a task that you believe to be impossible, you apply some sort of handicap or barrier so that you will not be blamed for the failure of the task. This could be that you stay up all night the day before a big test so that you can blame your bad grades on that rather than admitting that you are not intelligent.
To Secure Help: Self-Deprecating Strategies
Sometimes when people desire some form of aid or help they might confess their inability to do a task to someone around them in an attempt that the other person will offer help. Some people might use this to push an annoying task onto another person.
To Hide Faults: Self-Monitoring Strategies
One way to manage peoples impressions of you is to suppress negative things about yourself. For example if you usually talk with a lot of slang or swear words you may want to stop doing that when you are surrounded by coworkers.
To Be Followed: Influencing Strategies
When you want to influence others you usually start with displaying your credibility in the area, along with showing off your competence and character. The point of this is to appeal to the emotions of your listeners so that they will view you as a leader or with respect. Although if you do attempt this and you happen to fail they may see you as being even lower than before
To Confirm Self-Image: Image-Confirming Strategies
A lot of times people will show off or do something in order to bolster their own self image. If they see themselves as some form of a teacher or good helper they will always try to help others with whatever they can in order to fit this image. Too much of this can make people feel as if you are too perfect, as if you are not real. This can have negative effects on your relationships with them and others.
