Sexism
"Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that's why other people hated them so."
This quote was spoken by Scout, who have been taught from an early age that girl are worse than boys.
This also shows that Jem thinks people favour boys more than they favour girls, and they even dislike girls to the degree that people "hate them".
Sexism means to judge people unfairly based on their gender. In other words, this is gender inequality or gender stereotypes. A particular gender (male or female), are discriminated just because of their sex. This is typically against females, although sexism is not much of a problem in developed countries now. However, in the 1930s, there is severe discrimination with women and how they behave.
In TKAMB, Aunt Alexandra is a typical feminine character. She always tells Scout to "Behave like a lady", and Scout thinks being a girl is a bad thing.
author is a women, stereotyping men too. Maybe this happened in her life
Quotes
- “You ain't got no business bringin' white chillun to a nigger church.”
This quote is from a black woman, Lula, when she was angered when Jem and Scout went to a black church.
The churches / religious services for the white people and the black people are separate, which demonstrates obvious racism and segregation.
- “In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins.”
This quote is from Atticus when he tries to find justice for Tom in the trial. However, in the end he fails and Tom was still "guilty".
This shows obvious inequality and prejudice between the white and the black, as the white man “always wins”.

Explaining Quotes
In quote one, the author depicts the scene when a black woman gets angry because of the separation between the black and white church. In the 1930s, during when TKAMB was written, it was when the black people and the white people were separated in everything because of the Jim Crow Laws (The Segregation). Even water fountains were separated. This is why Lula got so furious when Jem and Scout, who were white, went to a black church.
In quote two, racism is clear in the quote, as people generally think white people are right and therefore higher than black people. This ugly truth means that the people in TKAMB though white people as more trustworthy people, and even though there is obvious evidence that they are lying, they still choose the white. Even if the black person is clearly innocent, he would still be "guilty" in a court with a white person.
Racism
Racism means to judge people by their race(colour of their skin), most likely the White people feel more superior towards Black people. Jem and Scout grow up in Macomb, Alabama. It may be a fictional town but the story is real-life. Alabama is to this day a very racist state, that's because of of the slave trade in the 18th century.
"The sheriff hadn't the heart to put him in jail alongside negroes, so Boo was locked in the courthouse"
Although Boo was guilty for breaking the law, he had special treatment because of his race. If he was black, he would have been put in jail.
This statement makes black people (negroes) sound that they are more like animals than people because the sheriff thinks that putting Boo Radley along the Negroes was disgusting, as if the black people are contagious.
