Sacraments of Baptism
Infant Baptism
Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, Methodist and United Reformed Christians now practise this
-
Babies are welcomed by the church through baptism and the parents thank God for their newborn and celebrate
"I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" is said whilst holy water is poured over the babies head. Symbols like the cross are drawn on the forehead and anointing the baby with oils. The parents light a candle called the Paschal Candle.

Believer's Baptism
Pentecostalist's think that babies are too young to understand baptism and should wait until they are old enough to make a decision.
-
this involves being submerged into a pool of Holy water, which symbolises cleansing from sin and rising to a new life with Jesus
anyone being baptised this way might read a passage from the Bible and/or give a testimony of their faith
The priest will step into the pool with them and say "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"
Sacraments are holy rituals that express an inner spiritual experience. Catholic and Orthodox Christians have seven sacraments :
- Baptism
- Confirmation
- Holy communion
- Marriage
- Holy Orders,
- Reconciliation
- The anointing of the sick
Many protestant churches see Baptism and Holy communion as important rituals because they believe Jesus instructed them to undertake these . Some churches that practise believers baptism consider it an important ceremony but do not refer to it as a 'sacrament' . Other churches like the Quakers or The Salvation Army, do not use any sacraments.
For many Churches baptism is the initiation rite by which people become members of the Christian church .In baptism the person is oficially known as a child of God and they recieve God's grace . Their sins are forgiven and they enter a new life with Jesus.
When John the baptist baptised Jesus in the River Jordan , two significant things happened that showed God's approval of his son's mission see Mark 1 : 9 - 11 it set an example for his followers to be baptised to receive the holy spirit and begin a new life as a christian.
Sacraments involve: symbolic actions words and physical elements such as : water in baptism and bread and wine in the holy communion . Many Christians believe that sacraments help strenghthen their relationship with God by making him a part of their life . They are important because they affirm that Christians are part of the of the body of Christ
