PLOT:
Silence in Prague:
Szara picked up baggage from the train station. The bag was a satchel that was sturdy and locked. This is the bag where the papers about Stalin were recovered. Szara got to Berlin and is going to interview Dr. Julius Baumann. He tours Baumanns factory and learns that the wire is used in fighter planes. Szara is then called back to Moscow.
8, Rue Delesseux:
Szara met Herbert Hull and showed him around Russia. Szara was interrogated and lied because he left out Marta Hehct. Abramov wants Szara to be hooked up with one of the networks in Western Europe and become a spymaster. Abramov introduced Szara to Dershani. He began working for OPAL who wanted him to embrace being a journalist. He went to 8, Rue Delesseux. Szara was assigned to Silo and he went to Paris to go Spy on Dr. Baumann. Szara learned that the amount of wire Baumann was making it was enough to kill 1,000,000 people. Szara went to a synagogue where he met Bloch. Seneschal was murdered. Szara took the train to Lisbon and then went to New York to see Hull.
The Iron Exchange:
Abramov is going to confront Dershani. Abramov tells Szara it is a good time for jews to stay invisible. Szara is being sent to Berlin to talk to OTTER and give money to the Raven Network. Szara first spied on Baumann from a roof and then knocked on his door. Szara met Nadia Tscherova at a play she was in and paid her. Szara shared an evening with Marta. Marta tells Szara that her father wants to take over Baumanns business once he is taken away for being a Jew. Baumann has a protector for when he goes out, his name was Von Polanyi. Szara met Baumann in a synagogue in the middle of the night and Nazis found them. The Nazis tried to catch them, but they got away. Szara had to take Baumann to a hospital because he got injured. Szara had to tell Marta he had to leave and did it by a note. Szara met De Montfried and he wanted Szara to make real immigration papers. Maltsaev and Szara went to Switzerland.
The Renaissance Club:
Szara met with Lady Angela. Maltsaev was sent to Paris to spy on Szara. Szara and Maltsaev buried Abramov in a meadow. Szara went to a club and saw Lady Angela, they had a private dinner together and Fitzware interrupted them. Szara and Fitzware made a deal. The deal was that Fitzware would need to find the number of bombers Reich makes each month and Szara would help get immigrants in. Goldman told Szara that they needed to make a deal with Hitler because their army was too weak. The OTTER operation ended suddenly and badly. The pact of Hitler and Stalin had been announced to the world. Szara was catching the train to Lvov and a bomb was dropped by Nazis. Szara had to go to the hospital because of a concussion and their he met someone who made him meet with Vyborg.
Poste Restante:
Szara killed Maltsaev and stole his car to start driving North. He ended up at the Pripet Marshes. Szara arrived to Kovono which is in the Pale of Settlement. He rented a room with two other men in a boarding apartment. Szara burned all of his papers. Szara went to Berlin and stayed with Nadia. The end of the novel has a plot twist and Szara ends up being able to spend the rest of his time with Nadia who he is in love with.

CHARECTERS
Dr. Julius Baumann: a Jewish man who owned the wire company that would supply the wires to the German air force.
Szara: The protagonist who is a spy for the NKVD. He would travel from place to place to collect information for the NKVD.
Marta: the women who Szara fell in love with while he was working on the Baumann case. He would spend many nights with Marta. Marta's father also would want to take over the wire company once Baumann is taken away because he is Jewish.

Nadia: a group leader of the Raven Network. Szara ends up being together with Nadia in the end of the novel.
SYMBOLS/THEMES
Morals of Spying: Szara shows that he has morals when he is spying. For example when he wants to help get the immigration papers so the Jewish people can go somewhere to be saved. A time where Szara shows that his morals didn't get in the way is when he kills Maltsaev.

Ideology: In the beginning of the novel Szara does it because he believes that he needs to help his country, but later in the novel Szara is spying because of his morals.

Ego: Szara spies for his ego in a non selfish way. He spies because he wants to help other people and stop the discrimination of Jewish people.
