Key A-Level Concepts
Codified Constitution
-
Whilst there are mechanisms in place to amend it, it is a difficult process
-- Out of 11,000 proposed amendments, only 27 have made it into the constitution
The Constitution lays out the specific roles of each branch of government, allowing them to be limited and controlled
Limited Government
There are checks and balances in place to ensure that no single branch of government has too much power
Dates back to the creation of the document, and the fears of the founding fathers surrounding tyrannical leaders
-
Flexibility/Rigidity
-
The UK Constitution is uncodified and unentrenched, therefore relatively easy to amend
In contrast, the US Constitution has certain rights which can not be changed at all, implying that it is rigid
Federalism
This is the notion that powers are shared between the national government and the individual states.
The national government has the right to legislate on certain issues, such as foreign or environmental policy
Anything not explicitly identified in the Constitution, according to the 5th Amendment, is left for the state governments to legislate on.
