Changes After the Cold War
Eastern Europe
Political
In Romania, the government has undergone changes which push for more accountability to the people. Although, Communist leaders have remained in charge which can cause some setbacks.
Economic
Once the Soviet Union fails to exist, the biggest change in economy is the rise of free market businesses. In the time of the Soviet Union and Communism, the government had run all the businesses. Although, when Communism collapsed the citizens were given the liberty of taking control of the economy.
Social
After Gorbachev stops giving military aid to Czechoslovakia, the people see it as a perfect time to start protests for they won't be killed. As many as 500,000 people protested Communism because of the lack of rights and job opportunities it was giving them.
Western Europe
Political
In Germany, the Berlin Wall was broken down symbolizing the end of the Cold War and reunification of the West and East into a united democratic and capitalist Germany.
Social
A growing problem in France was the resentment against foreign-born residents. This was especially noticeable between the remainder of the French population and the Muslim community.
Economic
After the Cold War, leaders of Western Europe had faced many economic challenges. A solution known as the European Union was formed and established a common currency, the euro, which made trade easier. Overall, this organization aided in the rebuilding of struggling European economies.
North America
Political
The status of French-speaking Quebec province is something that Canadians have seen as an issue since the Cold War. Although, Quebec voters narrowly reject the idea of secession and debates still continue.
Social
American filmmakers and performers have helped spread U.S. popular culture throughout many countries. This is seen as a problem because American culture takes away from the country's own culture. This growing problem is known as cultural imperialism.
Economic
As the Cold War ended, Reagan's spending policies produced budget deficits for the U.S. that presidents today still struggle with fixing. He did this by reducing welfare policies which cut spending on food stamps, school lunch programs, and job programs. He reprioritized this spending on the largest peacetime military in U.S. history which rose spending from $361 billion to over $3 trillion.
East Asia
Political
After Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping rose to power and reformed the Communist government. His new government sought four modernizations which included new policies in agriculture, technology, industry, and national defense. Although, they are yet to be a democracy.
Social
Many tensions between the people of North Korea and South Korea have developed primarily due to North Korea's nuclear weapon program.
Economic
Japan's economy has slipped into a recession after the Cold War, facing slow economic growth and heavy deflation. This became even more extreme after a large earthquake had produced a tsunami devastating Japan and further weakening its economy.
South/Central America
Social
Increased public education and economic growth have lessened the gap between rich and poor in many South American countries. This has led to better relations between the average people.
Economic
Haiti has been a very poor country since the Cold War, but with the devastating effects of an earthquake this country has only faced more economic problems.
Political
After the Cold War, the governments of Cuba and the U.S. have begun to repair their relationship which was strained under the leadership of Fidel Castro.
South and Southeast Asia
Social
A rivalry between India and Palestine have led to continued terrorism and disputes over territory. These problem derive from the want of control of holy areas to the world's three larges religions.
Economic
Since the Cold War, most countries in this region have experienced strong economic growth. For example, India has become a growing power and may have the third-largest economy by 2035.
Political
In recent years, many areas in this region have once again moved toward a democracy, but other problems remain. For example, the Philippines are democratic but face large amounts of terrorism.
Middle East
Political
Much of the Middle East faces political instability due to factors including ethnic tensions, high unemployment, growing poverty rates, poor education, and limited civil liberties.
Social
Iran enforces strict adherence to Islamic law, which limits the people's basic rights.
Economic
In general, one of the biggest problems in the Middle East could very well be terrorism. With the increase of terrorist groups, destruction only adds to the poverty of the countries making them go in debt trying to rebuild.
Africa
Social
AIDS is a huge problem that sweeps through Africa. Due to the many interactions and lack of sanity, AIDS is easily spread throughout the continent leading to the deaths of millions.
Economic
Rapid population growth has led to an increase in poverty for Africa. New housing and food supplies become a struggle for the growing population.
Political
African nations have shown signs of political stability since the end of the Cold War. They reached independence and found ways to cooperate with one another.
