Changes After The Cold War
East Asia
In China there was a one-child policy put into place to deal with the issue of population growth. Chinese people have to deal with the poor conditions in their places of work. Japan has problems with it's population having the highest proportion of people over the age of 65 in the world.
There were high growth rates in industry for China as they also closed inefficient enterprises. Along with doing this China opened a stock market and repaired international trade relations by joining the WTO.
China has decided that they will harshly punish the people who decide to protest against the government. North Koreans have to deal with a communist military government.
Eastern Europe
In Poland there were worker protests against communist rule then they got new elections that allowed them to put an end to the Communists there. Poland is also embracing a free-market economy but experiencing unemployment as an issue of the rapid change.
When the communist government collapsed in Czechoslovakia the old ethnic conflicts arose and it peacefully divided because of the issue. Romanians had to deal with their leader, who eventually was executed, killing people for demonstrations against communism.
Czechoslovakia had mass demonstrations with gatherings around 500,000 people against the government. Writers and intellectuals continually opposed the communist government here also and when it collapsed one of the writers became president.
Africa
Nigeria has issues between religious groups and it spread to nearby countries. One of the countries was Cote d'Ivoire which when new elections came around there was violence among ethnic groups.
Gbagbo became president in Cote d'Ivore and he refused to let go of power and used the military to terrorize citizens.
African countries established the AEC to deal with the many political problems in the region. They also created the AU which is very is similar to the EU.
Middle East
There are some social issues in Iran since they adhere strictly to Islamic law limiting the rights of women, freedom of assembly and free press. After the U.S. invaded Iraq it fell into civil war between the Shias and Sunnis.
Israelis and Palestinians have not been able to reach agreements due to the terror attacks that have continued as well as the disputes over territory causing this. Iran violently oppress protestors who protest the results of elections.
Egypt has had the issue of a high unemployment rate which means less income from taxes for the government which could possibly lead to economic issues especially with a majority of the population under 25.
Western Europe
In Great Britain there was a new party elected into the government called the Labour Party and Moderate Tony Blair became prime minister. In France conservative parties gained 80 percent of the seats in the national assembly.
France could not escape the financial issues with the euro crisis causing the economy to start failing. There were issues with the reunified Germany because the Eastern part was going to cost more money than expected to rebuild forcing the government to raise taxes.
Germany was reunified in 1990 as the Berlin Wall was torn down allowing East and West Germany to become one. French people began to resent their foreign-born residents who were mostly Muslim.
North America
The U.S. were occupied with the war in Iraq during the Bush administration. Bill Clinton was elected president but couldn't get reelected due to charges of presidential misconduct.
The status of French-speaking Quebec province in Canada has been an issue. Mexico has had to deal with the issues of drug wars among gangs, political corruption, high unemployment, and illiteracy since the Cold War ended.
The U.S. had their budget deficit increase by over 400 million dollars. Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. approved NAFTA to allow free and more profitable trade.
South/Central America
A few of the countries in this region have favored left-wing governments with some being Venezuela, Brazil, and Nicaragua.
Many of the Central American countries deal with a large gap between rich and poor but that has been improving with the greater economic growth in the region.
Many Central American countries face poverty and gang related violences not allowing them to grow and prosper, such as in Honduras and El Salvador.
South and Southeast Asia
India has grown to one of the worlds best economies although most of the people working are still farming.
In India there was growing instability in the government due to the two different parties running against each other. India has also had reforms with new public work projects and hot lunch programs for primary school children.
There has been ongoing conflict between Muslims and Hindus throughout India. There have been issues with India and Pakistan due to Pakistans nuclear program.
