End of the Cold War changes
Eastern Europe
Economical: Food shortages caused rationing in Romania. This shows that the economy is weak from poverty.
Political: In Poland, Lech Waleas organizes Solidarity but gets arrested for risk that Poland will break from Soviet. Later, Waleas is freed and gets elected as president.
Social: Poland embraces free market reforms and modernization after Lech Walesa gets elected as president.
Western Europe
Political: In 2005, Angela Merkel, who was the leader of the Christian Democrats, was elected as the chancellor of Germany. She is the first woman chancellor of Germany.
Social: Germany reunified in 1990 when the Berlin War was torn down.
Economical: European Union formed in 1933. They established a common currency called the euro.
North America
Political: Ronald Regan's spending polices produced record high government budget defects.
Economic: Canada, the United States, and Mexico approved the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
Social: In the 90s, the woman's movement was setback. Some women wanted to return to traditions while others disagreed and found a way to balance their carers and their families.
South/Central America
Social: South America has problems with social equality. However, South America has been able to improve education.
Economical: South America has focused on economic growth and made it more of a priority.
Political: Since the democratic government are weak the government in Central America has been taken over by military dictators. Citizens are fleeing the country to get away.
Africa
Social: Poverty is a huge problem in Africa. Since many people can't afford proper health care diseases such as AIDS have become widespread.
Economical: Organizations have formed to build economic integration. These organizations are similar to the European Union.
Political: Some nations show signs of progress toward political stability despite many other problems.
Middle East
Social: Efforts at peace between Israel and Palestine continue to fail.
Economical: Common problems include high unemployment and growing poverty rates.
Political: In 2011 woman in Saudi Arabia were allowed to vote. This increased the amount of people voting.
East Asia
Political: Since the ruler Mao has died the government has made efforts to modernize China's industry. They have done this through steps such as agriculture, technology, and national defense.
Economical: Predictions have been made that China would become an economic superpower in the twenty-first centry. These predictions were based of the economic growth rates in the 1990s.
Social: In China, a one-child policy was put into place to control the population growth. This policy was adopted in 1979.
South and Southeast Asia
Social: Israelis and Palestinian fight over Jerusalem. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism consider Jerusalem holy land
Economical: India's economy is believed to be one of the fastest growing.
Political: Israel and Palestinian fight politically over the holy land of Jerusalem.
