Cold War Changes
Eastern Europe
Economic: The Czech Republic has one of the most stable economies of the post-Communist Eastern European States because of their new president, Vaclav Klaus, new ideas.
Political: In 1988, Poland held the first free elections in Eastern Europe in 40 years. They elected Lech Walesa as the first Polish president.
Social: In 1988 and 1989, mass demonstrations took place through Czechoslovakia because of their total opposition towards the Soviet government.
Africa
Political:: Some countries south of the Sahara, such as South Africa and Nigeria are making great strides towards political improvement and can be visually seen with how the country is functioning but still some countries, like Niger and Sudan are filled with bloody civil wars.
Social:: The growing population has become a huge problem in countries such as Nigeria due to the amount of poverty the economy is not strong enough to hold the immense amount of overpopulation in this region.
Economical:: In Niger their per capita is about $415. This means that more than half of the residents in this area are in extreme poverty. Living with one of the lowest per capitas in the world.
East Asia
Political:: Political wars and tension between North and South Korea over policies like Nuclear Weapon programs. Also the dispute over their different choices of government, North korea is a harsh, isolated dictatorship and South Korea is a form of democracy that is in relations with The United states and other democratic countries.
Social::The one child policy in China decreases the overpopulation concern but Also lowers the ratio of working adults and retired seniors this would eventually cause China to not be able to afford things such as medical care for their elders because the tax income would not be high enough.
Economical:: Japan in the 1980’s began to have a huge economical problem of deflation, which is when there is too little money in circulation, this cause consumers to stop buying things and companies not having enough money to make quality products. Also this was causing families to not be able to feed their families because they did not have enough money. Their economy again fell when being hit by a large Tsunami in the mid 90’s devastating many citizens of Japan.
Western Europe
Economic: Throughout the 1980s Western European states like Greece and Ireland had begun to recover their economies but problems still remained like unemployment and not having a common currency.
Political: In 1982 the Christian Democratic Union of Helmut Kohl formed a new, more conservative government in West Germany. This had an effect to the unification of the two Germanys.
Social: The Berlin wall was torn down 1990 and when the two Germanys unified there was joy coming from both sides. People who had family and friends on opposite sides of the wall got to see each other for the first time in 30 years.
Middle East
Political: growing tension between Israel and Palestine have caused many failed attempts to find ways to peace. The tension is over religious conflicts and political conflicts.
Social:: Iran has little to no civil rights. This is due to the fact they follow strict Islamic rule which is very specific and harsh to the citizens.
Economical:: Much of the middle east, including Iran and Afghanistan is facing growing poverty rates. Omen and Yemen have very high unemployment rates in many countries are staggering due to how high they are.
South/Southeast Asia
Political::India - The congress party, which was a party mainly based on the basics of Gandhism and raising up all sections of society, remained the main party through the 1990’s but quickly began to decline and new parties such as the Hindu Bharata Janata party started to form.
Social:: India imput new programs in the that such include many public work programs and a hot lunch initiative in public schools. Many citizens of India works in the agricultural job field, but now service and industrial fields are starting to greatly attribute the the job market.
Economic:: India in 1996 and 2004, the congress party returned to power and made a commitment to make economic reform even in the rural areas of India. India’s economy has now emerged as one of the fasted and most growing economies in the world ever since reforms were made by Manmohan Singh, who eventually became the prime minister and a highly regarded politician by many other world leaders.
South/Central America
Political: Since 1990, there had been a noticeable trend of the election of left-wing governments. Which have been happening up until 2011 in countries Venezuela, Brazil, Chile and Nicaragua.
Economic: Many latin American countries have a problem with income equality aka the large gap between the rich & poor. But South American countries like Brazil are still way better off than some Central American countries like Mexico.
Social: Columbia is the world’s biggest producer of cocaine. This is how Mexico earns money because they have the biggest gateway into the U.S.
North America
Economic: In the U.S. spending had risen from 631 billion dollars in 1981 to over a trillion dollars by 1987. This produced a record breaking high for budget deficits from the Reagan administration.
Social: In the 1990s in the U.S. there was a backlash against the women’s movement and while there has been some improvement in women’s equality throughout the 2000s, they still do most of the child care and domestic work within the homes.
Political: In 1993 Canada approved the North American Free Trade Agreement along with the U.S. and Mexico in order to make trade easier and more profitable. It turned out that the agreement favored the U.S. too much and the prime minister at the time lost his position.
