Eastern Europe
Economic (Russia)- At the end of 1999, Yeltsin resigned and the job went to Vladimir Putin. In July 2001, Putin launched reforms to boost growth and budget revenues. The reforms included the free sale and purchase of land and tax cuts. Since Putin's reforms Russia has experienced a budget surplus and a growing economy and can contribute much of its economic growth to its oil and gas imports.
Poltitcal-One of the main political changes in Eastern Europe is the fall of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was mad of 15 separate republics that included 92 ethnic groups and 112 different languages.
Ethnic tensions were making Yugoslavia and Serbia to attack other countries. The serbs then attacked Bosnia-Herzegonia and acquired 70% of Bosnian territory. Many Bosnians were Muslims. The Serbs followed a policy called ethnic cleansing towards Bosnians. In 1995, with the support from NATO airstrikes, Bosnian and Croatian forces regained considerable territory lost to Serbian forces. The Serbs signed a formal peace treaty that split Bosnia into a Serb republic and a Muslim-Croat federation.
North America
Economic (United States)-A big change economically for the U.S was national spending. National spending went from $631 billion in 1981 to over 1trillion in 1987, resulting in Budget Deficits. Another big change was the creation of the North American Free Trade Organization (NAFTA) which the U.S, Mexico, and Canada signed which offers easier trade and more profitable trade.
Political (United States)-
A big political event that happened in North America was the election of Barack Obama. He moved to deal with the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression, the pass of national healthcare legislation, and the war in Afghanistan
Social (United States)- A big social problem in North America was national security, especially in the U.S. The 9/11 terrorist attacks resulted in higher security in airports and other places and the Iraq-led war in Afghanistan.
South/Central America
Political- In seemed as a popular trend in South America as many countries started going towards more left-wing governments.These countries have pushed for more democratic freedoms, , social reforms, and economic growth.
Economic- Programs for increased public education and greater economic growth have helped to alleviate Latin America's greatest challenge, income inequality, or the large gap between the rich and the poor.
Social-In Brazil, Lula da Silva pursued a policy of increased trade and educational reform. He expanded the middle class and created new consumers while continuing to increase exports.
Western Europe
Social- A big social change in Western Europe is cultural imperialism between the U.S and Western Europe. Sports is a big business and most Europeans watch American sports and know American brand names.
Political- A big political change in Western Europe was the fall `of the Berlin Wall or the reunification of Germany. When the Soviet Union fell, Germany tore down the Berlin Wall, therefore reunifying Germany into a steady democracy.
Economic- A big economic change in Western Europe was the creation of the European Union (EU). One of its first goals was to create a common currency, the euro and the EU was a chiefly economic union
Africa
Political- A big political change in Africa is that many nations in Africa are trying to develop and spread democratic ideals to the people and other nations in Africa.
Social- A big social change in Africa is that it is having rapid population growth and AIDS is being felt with highly in Africa.
Economic- A big economic change in Africa was the formation of the African Union (AU) to help advise political and economic problems.
Middle East
Economic-Many people in the Middle East suffered high unemployment and people were jobless because of tensions or conflicts within or outside their country.
Social- In Iraq, protests also swept the country as people sought better government services.
Political- After the Invasion of Iraq, civil war broke out between the Sunni Muslims and the Shia Muslims and caused devastation all throughout Iraq.
East Asia
Economic- China's economy was booming after it joined the WTO and started trading with other countries.They also opened up a stock market and business was in China and its economy was booming.
Social- A big social change in East Asia is the improvement of human rights in China because before people were punished if they spoke out against the government.
Political- A big change in East Asia was how people in China were given more human rights after the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
South and Southeast Asia
Economic- India's economy has emerged as one of the world's largest and fastest growing. Economic reforms in 1991 fostered foreign investment and began to move India toward a more market-based economy.
Social- Conflict between Hindus and Muslims continued, and religious differences have faded a long term dispute between India and Pakistan. The danger escalated in 1998 with both countries possessing nuclear warheads. In 2003, the two countries ordered a cease fire and restored diplomatic relations.
Political- A big political change in South and Southeast Asia is that the Congress Party was the leading party in India, but began to decline. Growing political instability was accompanied by rising tensions between Hindus and Muslims.
