Cold War Changes
Eastern Europe
Social: Serbia attacked Bosnian territory used ethnic cleansing to get rid of the Muslims in Bosnia. NATO, became involved, helping Bosnia regain most of their land.
Economic: In Romania, Nicolae Ceausesu's economic policies lead to challenges in the country. Opposition was growing, and living standards were dropping. Rationing was also becoming prevalent due to food shortages. When Nicolae and his wife were executed, the new government was led by Communist leaders until 1996.
Political: In the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev was elected as leader of the Communist Party in 1985. Gorbachev made an agreement with the U.S. to slow the arms race, reunififed Germany and halted support to the Communist government.
Western Europe :
Economic: Some of the economic struggles in Germany led to high unemployment and upset citizens. Due to this, some of the Social Democrats came into power one again, but did not help the economy.
Political: Erich Honecker, head of the Communist party in East Germany ruled harshly. While many fled to West Germany, some stayed and protested for their rights. Eventually, West and East Germany opened their borders and families reunited. This led to Germany being reunified.
Social: In 1995, France experienced resentment towards foreign born citizens. Most prevalent was the tension between the French and Muslim community. In 2007 Nicolas Sarkozy wa elected.
South/Central America
Political: In South America, there has been a rise in popularity to left-wing governments. Continuing, many countries have been pushing for democratic freedoms, social reforms and economic growth. The countries include Venezuela, Chile, and Nicaragua.
Social: Due to the Mexican drug cartels, there has been a great increase in violence. Innocent civilians are getting killed, and many of the drug cartel members are getting bolder, due to the amount of weapons they have. Most of the drugs are being transported from Columbia to Mexico and then into the U.S.
Economic: Since the late 1990's Latin America has had numerous problems with income equality. The gap between the rich and the poor is wide, and many countries such as Bolivia are poverty stricken.
North American
Economic: The Reagan administration created a record budget deficit in 1981 due to the spending policies. These spendings rose from 631 billion to increasing to over a trillion dollars. The Reagan Revolution also caused some controversy when he cut spending on job programs, food stamps, and school lunch programs.
Social: In 1993, Canada agreed to the NAFTA, or North American Free Trade Agreement, along with Mexico and the U.S. Some Canadians believe that NAFTA was too favorable to the U.S. which created popularity loss for their Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney.
Politics: The Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, has dominated Mexican politics for 70 years, until 1990. Also, in the United States the politics have been switching left and right since the early 2000's. The U.S. is currently the only world superpower.
Africa
Political: In 2004, Lusia Diogo become president of Mozambique, adding to the trend of female political leaders. There has also been a trend of multi-party elections since then. In Senegal, for example national elections were held in 2000, which brought an end to the four decades of Socialist rules.
Social: In 1993, the Nigerian president died causing an outbreak of resentment between the Christians in the South and the Muslims in the West. The elections in 2000 resulted in a Christian president being elected. These elections were marked with violence and changes of voting irregularities.
Economic: In 2001, the African Union (AU) replaced the Organization of African Unity (OAU) . The new organizations goal is to mediate several of the conflicts in the region. The AU also promotes economic growth and democracy, something many African countries have picked up.
Middle East
Political: After 23 years of an oppressive government, the Tunisian president fled the country following the mass demonstrations that began in December 2010. Other protests began soon after tat.
Economic: In Tusnia and Egypt these countries have a high percentage of young people. For example, half of Egypt's 80 million people population are under the age of 25. Most of these citizens are unemployed causing a growing poverty rate.
Social: In 2009, after the re-election of Mohammed Ahmadinejad in Iran, thousands of citizens protested the election as fraud. The violent oppression of the Iranian protesters by the military forces were caught on cell phones and posted on the internet.
South/Southeast Asia
Economic: In 1991, India's economy transitioned into being more market based. The industrial and service sectors now constitute a large portion of India's GOP rather than agriculture, which is still large part of India's economy. Today, India's economy is one of the strongest in the world.
Social: In Pakistan on September of 2001, they were the main international attention as military forces arrived in Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban. Despite the popularity of the Taliban in among the Pakistani citizens, President Musharraf pledged to help defeat the terrorists.
Political: In India, conflicts between the Hindus and the Muslims continued to prevail after the 1990's. There was threat of war in 2002, but in 2003 the countries agreed to have diplomatic relations.
East Asia
Politics: After the rule of Mao, the new Chinese government sought to modernize China's indrustry, agriculture, technology, and national defense. Communism still remains strong, despite the calls for reform.
Social: Unfortunately, in China, some of the rapid growth in the economy has led to poor working conditions and low salaries. This has caused some labor unrest in China.
Economic: In China, the economic growth rates in the1990's led to predictions that China would become an economic superpower in the twenty-first century, which is now currently true. This was caused by the new politics after the reign of Mao, as the per capita income doubled in the 80's.
