A New Era
-
North America
Social- North America social change when the prime minister changed. This happened because Canadians thought NAFTA favored the US over them. The prime minister was blamed because he's the one that agreed with NAFTA.
Economic- Reagan revolution occurred. This took the US into a new direction. It cut off spending on food stamps, school lunch programs, and job programs. The upside of this was that reagan was responsible for the largest military buildup in history
Political- NAFTA changed north america greatly. It created an agreement between Canada, USA, and Mexico about trade. (made it more profitable and easier for everyone.)
East Asia
Economic- After Moa, China sought to modernize industry, agriculture, technology, and national defense. Japan's economy fell into recessions and weakened. This caused scarcity in jobs.
Political- In China Communism is still held strong despite calls for reform. North Korea isolated itself under a military dictatorship. South korea used a democracy causing even more tension between North & South Korea.
Social- China adapted a one child policy to control population. This policy allowed the people that followed it to receive incentives (ex: education benefits, child care, housing). Ended up stopping this policy because there wasn't enough people to join the work force.
Middle East
Economic- Poverty was a big issue in the Middle East. The people there faced unemployment. Iran also enforced strict adherence to islamic law (limiting basic rights).
Social- Efforts of peace between Israel and Palestine continue to fail. These two places being so close to each other make them not getting along an even bigger issue. Iran having limiting basic rights of some people (people of the islamic religion) also affected them socially.
Political- A lot of the Middle East wasn't politically stable. Because the Middle East is unstable it caused many problems. Governments being corrupt and Iran is enforcing strict adherence to the Islamic Law which limits basic rights are examples of the instability.
South/Central America
Economic- The gap between the rich and the poor has became smaller. But Latin America still has a very high poverty rate. High poverty rates make the economy worse.
Social- Many people have been calling for reforms and and economic growth and they have been succeeding. Latin america became very separate from the reliance of foreign countries (this created more of a social structure)
Political- Many countries have been transitioning to democracy. In latin america they have oppressive rules and many gov. related struggles
Western Europe
-
Social- France made many problems and resentment grew against the foreign-born residents, especially Muslims. People in germany began mass demonstrations against regime in east germany.
Politcal- Germany reunified in 1990 and tore down the Berlin Wall. West germany became democratic under the rule of Helmut Kohl. East germany 's gov stayed under communist rule.
South and Southeast Asia
Economic- Japans economy fell into a recession during the 1990s and their economy went through slow growth & deflation. The deflation of the economy affected it the most.
Politicial- Political tension between North & South Korea continues (mainly because of North Koreas nuclear weapons program).
Social- Tension between North & South Korea caused by North Korea's nuclear weapons program. North & South Korea are also negatively affected by each other socially because they do not communicate well.
Eastern Europe
Social- Soviet Union falls (1990) and a writer becomes president of Czechoslovakia. Ethnic conflict rises and In Czechoslovakia protests of 5000,00 or more took place led by intellectuals.
Political- In Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania Gorbachev stopped giving military aid and stops military presence showing the Weaknesses of the Soviet Union to control pieces.
Economic-Poland embraced free market reforms and modernization. Also in Poland, workers protested change and organized a national trade union in 1990. This group got the support of the majority of workers there and the roman catholic church.
