Changes of the Cold War
Eastern Europe
Political- In Poland revolutions started. They created Solidarity trying to make a change. They had an election and became democratic.
Social- When Gorbachev lessens the Communist control on the Soviet Union, old ethnic conflicts come up. First in Soviet Georgia there is request for independence, then in Baltic states. Gorbachev was arrested and they moved for complete independence.
Economic- After the collapse of the Soviet Union and communism, economic reforms began. Eastern Europe created open markets. This allowed the people to control what products they buy and sell.
North America
Political- President Regan put the county into a budget deficit. Then George Bush replaced Regan to try to fix the problem. After his inability to help the deficit, Bill Clinton was elected. He was a new kind of Democrat, who favored Republican policies.
Social- Canda approved NAFTA to improve trade between the three countries. To many Canadians, the NAFTA agreement benefit the US more than any other country. This caused the current prime minister to lose his popularity and a new one to be elected.
Economic- Regan reduced welfare policies by reducing spending on food stamps, school lunch programs, and job programs. Despite this, total federal spending rose and the government went into budget deficit. Future presidents have to correct the deficit created by Regan.
South America
Economic- Latin America is economically dependent on other countries. Programs for increased education and greater economic growth has helped this problem. Another large problem is a gap between the rich and poor.

Africa
Economic- African societies are still trying to find ways to improve the economy. They face rapid population growth and because of that, poverty. Another widespread problem is AIDS in Africa.
Political- Some nations in Africa are racked by civil war or ruled by brutal dictatorship. Africans created the AEC to address political and economic issues. Organizations like this are meant to help stabilize the government.
Social- In Nigeara, there are divisions between Muslims and Christians that created violence. In the early 2000s riots broke out between the two religions as a result of Muslims deciding to carry Islamic Law throughout their jurisdiction. Since then a Christian leader was elected for president, which was followed by violence and charges of voting irregularities.
Middle East
Political- Women's rights, free speech and free assembly are all limited. This is under strict Muslim control and Islamic Law. In the election of Mahmoud in 2009 people protested the outcome and declared election fraud.
Social- Efforts to make peace agreements between Israelis and Palestinians have been failing. Terrorism and battles for land have continued even with the PLO trying to stop them. A lot of the disputes for land have been over Jerulsulum.
Economic- Iran is under strict islamic law and Muslim clerics. There is no room for a growing economy. Everything is limited by the government.
East Asia
Political- In the late 80s people started protesting the government. With more people studying abroad came with people calling for a democracy. This cause mass demonstrations like Tiananmen Square.
Social- China created a one-child policy in 1979. This gave benefits to families that only had one child. This kept population down, but created a problem of an aging population.
Economic- China joined the WTO in 2001, strengthening their trade relations. China had become the 2nd largest economy behind the United States. But with such a fast growing economy there are poor working conditions and low salaries.
South and Southeast Asia
Political- In the early 1980s, the Congress Party is the leading party. Then new pastries like the BJP, try to gain control of the government. This caused a growing political instability.
Social- With rising political problems, tensions were created between Hindus and Muslims. This fuels the battle over Kashmir a territory between India and Pakistan. The problems grew when both countries started to test nuclear weapons.
Economic- Countries in Southeast Asia have experienced strong economic growth. This, however doesn't mean there aren't still problems. Terrorism is a large issue in this area. On the island of Mindanao, terrorism is used to get their demands for independence.
Western Europe
Political-In !982 a new, more conservative government was formed by Helmut Kohl in Germany. This government was soon forced to raise taxes. Other events like these made East and West Germany unify into one country.
Social-When the Berlin Wall was torn down, West and East Germany formed one Germany. People reunited with their families and friends. Now with a population of 79 million people, Germany became a leading power in Europe.
Economic- The European Community was changed to the European Union in 1993. One of the main goals of the EU was to create a common currency. They created the euro and by 2010 it had replaced 17 national currencies.
