We use the past tense to talk about
- something that happened once in the past
- something that was true for some time in the past

Had you been waiting long before the taxi arrived?
We had been trying to open the door for five minutes when Jane found her key.
The past perfect continuous corresponds to the present perfect continuous, but with reference to a time earlier than 'before now'. As with the present perfect continuous, we are more interested in the process.

She didn’t want to move. She had been living in Liverpool all her life.
Everything was wet. It had been raining for hours.

for something that started in the past and continued up to a given time in the past

As I was watching television the telephone rang.

We use the past continuous to talk about the past:
- for something which continued before and after another action
- to show that something continued for some time
