Glycosidic bond: formed between OH of anomeric C and OH of adjacent sugar and named alpha (OH groups of monomers involved in glycosidic bond on same plane) or beta (OH groups of monomers involved in glycosidic bond on different plane). Can also be linked to amino groups to form N-glycosidic bonds eg sucrose (glucose & fructose with alpha 1,2 bonds), lactose (galactose and glucose with beta 1,4 bonds), maltose (glucose with alpha 1,4 bonds), cellubiose (glucose with beta 1,4 bonds) and lactulose (galactose and fructose with beta 1,3 bonds). Can be further polymerised to form amylose, amylopectin, glycogen or dextran or OH groups substituted to form heparan sulfate, peptidoglycan or hyaluronic acid (glucuronic acid and an acetylated sugar monomer) or involved in conjugation to form glycolipids/glycoproteins
