Catholicism
In the mid 15th Century- reform was needed
Leader- Pope
Popes more interested in secular (non religious) matters than spiritual matters
Frequent complaints about a number of abuses in the Church and the poor education and low standards of many of the clergy
Islam
Follower of Islam- Muslim
Different groups in mid-fifteenth century
Muslims who lived in Spain- Moors
East- Ottoman empire/ Turkish empire or Turkey- Ottomans overthrown Byzantine empire in 1453 when they conquered Constantinople (present day Istanbul)
16th century- Ottomans under Suleiman the magnificent- controlled vast areas including much of South east Europe, west Asia and north Africa- stuck fear into heart of christian western Europe
Most Muslims resided in the countryside working on the lands of the nobility
Judaism
Follower of Judaism- Jew
Many Christians considered Jews to be anti-christian
Mid- fifteenth century- In Spain they were treated as Scapegoats for wrongs in society- which often led to massacres and forced conversions to Christianity
Many Jews were important in trade and professions such as medicine

Evidence for
Historian Henry Kamen quoted from a Czech travellor in 1466- the household of the Count of Haro- there were Christians Moors and Jews and he lets them all live in peace in their faith
One king of Aragon claimed- predecessors tolerated and siffered the Jews in their territories because the jews were a strong box and treasury of the kings
Evidence against
Christian victories of reconquest altered relationship between the religious groups- rulers continued to show support- general hostility towards them- particularly during economic depression and epidemics
Most Jews suffered increasingly during the fourteenth century from pogroms (organised massacres)- many were forced to join Christianity (conversos)
