2-hour job search - Steve Dalton
STEP 1: PRIORITIZE
LAMP technique
(1) List:
create a list of 40 ER (in 40 min!) in a spreadsheet
Method 1: Dream er
Method 2: Alumni er
Method 3: posting search
Method 4: trend-following
FOR INTL STUDENTS: search er who sponsored H-1B visa last year using
myvisajobs.com
or
U.S Department of Labor's annual list of er who sponsored H-1B visa
last year
Purpose of LAMP
: identify less-obvious er and systematically determine which of them to investigate further based on whether they offer any positive employment indicators
(2) Alumni:
everyone who is sympathetic to your cause and may advocate for your eventual recruitment (incl. literal alumni)
search Linkedin --> answer Y or N in the "Alumni" column of the LAMB spreadsheet
DO NOT RESEARCH THE ALUMS FURTHER. JUST
Y/N
(3) Motivation
rank er on the scale from 105 with 5 is the best in the LAMB spreadsheet, depending your CURRENT knowledge of the company.
DO NOT RESEARCH THE COMPANIES!!
(4) Posting
: search on Indeed to determine whether the company is hiring or not, if yes, does the position interest you.
DO NOT WASTE TIME READING THE ACTUAL POSTING
search 1:
"company's name" job title (ie: "McKinsey" consultant) --> USE QUOTES!! --> if 0 results, put a
"1" in POSTING column
of LAMP spreadsheet
search 2:
"company's name (ie: McKinsey) --> avoid the situation when the job posting uses different key words than you did. ie: consultant vs. analyst
"2" in POSTING column
: irrelevant openings but company's not under a hiring freeze
"3" in POSTING column
: relevant openings
