Adaptive Equipment to Promote Literacy
Using books that are designed for students with learning disbiliites
Software that translate text into Braille
Using hardware to allow for students to use a microphone to write instead of typing
SmartBoard technology can easily allow for students with different disabilities to actively participate in classroom
Macbooks/IPADs are a great tool which allows for mobility of educational materials around a classroom
Physical Space/Surrounding
Buttons to help with students ask for help
Mounting objects at a proper height for students
Being able to move in the classroom comfortably/without restrictions
Having tools in the classroom to support health/well-being
Need to allow for students who are active to have places to move around while still doing work
Have stations that will allow all students access to educational material
A student with multiple disabilities
"As the term suggests, this disability category encompasses a combination of conditions that may impact a student's ability to learn and achieve success in an academic setting. Students with severe disabilities are typically included under this umbrella terminology." - Project IDEAL
Instruction has to be given to all students until the age of 21.
How does a school go about educating people with multiple disabilities?
Staff
Need to have professionals willingly to help students, even though they may progress at a slow rate
Feedback from all staff/parents about the progress or need to help in other areas to help the student succeed
Need support-staff to help move/transport students from one location to another
Need parents to be involved in understanding the educational plan so that everyone is on the same page.
Need administrators who understand that even though the students have special needs, they are students at a school and should be treated equally
The more people involved the better chances for progress for the student
