CAT- CAT, which stands for Computer Axial Tomography, fires a beam of x-rays at the patient’s head which is slowly rotated, to give a clear image of a certain part of the brain. The machines are cheap, with an average price of £1200, and can produce detailed images very quickly. However, prolonged x-ray exposure can cause side-effects. They are often used to diagnose damage to organs, blood vessels, strokes and cancer.
