Emergent: Ages 1-7
Reading: pretend reading, read from memory

Beginning: Ages 4-9
Reading: reading new texts word by word, able to read with simple CVC words, some phrasing and expression, 100-150 words by sight in later phase of stage
Writing: Focused on letter-sound correspondence, simple stories, experiment with genres, edit own writing
Word Study: Spells words phonetically, experiences with medial vowels, accurately spells high frequency words (later stage)
Intermediate: Age 8-14
Reading: Good fluency and expression, prefers silent reading, faster at reading aloud, develop a critical stance
Writing: Responses are more sophisticated, compose longer pieces of writing, writes a larger variety of purposes
Word Study: Spells correctly, beginning to use a variety of print and digital resources to deepen understanding and knowledge of words
Transitional : Ages 6-10
Reading:most of reading is done silently, develops more expression, increases reading stamina, begins to self correct
Writing: compositions grow in length, begin to develop a writing voice, experiments with different writing tones
Word Study: spells most single syllable words correctly
Skillful: Ages 12+
Reading: Reads fluently & has good expression, explores genres, analyzes primary source material in depth
Writing: Capable of sophisticated compositions, wider range of genres, used writing process to develop and improve compositions.
Word Study: Understands more advanced spelling
Reading
Guided: Everyone has a book at the table where the other students are at centers. Generally books take about a week if you are meeting with them every day. Focusing on a small concept.
Interactive: Only teacher has book. He/she asks questions throughout the book, points out different things to look at, helps the children understand different words, models appropriate behavior and thinking while reading.
Writing/Word Study
Shared writing: Teacher has the pen and students come up with the ideas
Word study: Vocabulary, parts of speech. Can work during writers workshop
Work on strengthening writing, writing stories, editing stories
More student focused. Can do both individually or as a whole group
