America’s First Failure at Government
Economic disorganization
Congress couldn't regulate trade
Since congress had no control the central governent could make detrimental treaties with foreign countries without approval.
No uniform system of currency
each state had their own currency. this led to inability of funds transferred from state to state and the inadequate ability of control from the government.
No power of taxation
only states had the power to tax
Legislative Inefficiencies
Each state had one vote
small states were represented the same as large states. this meant the people were not represented properly.
Difficulty passing laws
9/13 votes were needed to pass a bill. This meant only 5 states had to oppose the bill. This led to the inability to pass a law quickly.
Impractical amendment process
Unanimous vote of all 13 colonies and the congress was necessary before an amendment could be passed.
Lack of central leadership
No independent judiciary
the states had full judicial power. there was no supreme court
No foreign affairs head
No president. No one to contact for diplomatic issues.
inability to deal with internal and external threats
congress could choose peace and war but could not assemble an army to fight the war.
