Local Area Network (LAN)
defination : LAN is a network that connects computers and devices in a small area such as home, school computer lab, office building or closely located buildings
owned by a single organization (school, college, university, company)
used to link computers and to share expensive devices (nodes) such as laser printer and file server
a network which consists of less than 500 interconnected devices across several buildings
EXAMPLES : a network that connects computers on three floors in an office building
Wireless LAN
LAN that uses radio signals to connect computers and other devices
computers and devices must have built-in wireless capabilities
centrally located Wireless Access Point (WAP)
Metropolitan Area
Network (MAN)
Defination : is a high-speed network that connect local area networks (MAN) in a metropolitan area such as a city or town
owned by a consortium or users or by a single network provider that sells the service to the users
EXAMPLES : Traffic light system in a city
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Defination : is a network that covers a large area such as a country or the world
involve many types of transmission media such as telephone lines, cables, or radio waves
it can be one large network or can consistof one or more LANs connected together
owned by a group of organizations including network service providers which provides network services
Business and government entities use WAN to relay data among employees, clients, buyers, and suppliers from various geographical locations
EXAMPLES : The Internet (the biggest WAN)
