THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) = composed of all the nerves that branch off from the brain and spine that allow your CNS to communicate with the rest of your body
Sensory Division:
(Afferent)
- picks up sensory stimulis
Motor Division:
(Efferent)
- sends direction from your brain to muscle and glands
Somatic Nervous System:
(Voluntary)
- rules skeletal muscle movement
Autonomic Nervous System:
(Involuntary)
- keeps your heart beating, lungs breathing and stomach churning
Sympathetic Division:
- mobilizes the body into action and gets it all fired up
Parasympathetic Division:
- relaxes the body and talks it down
Made up of Cells
Neurons (nerve cell) = respond to stimuli and transmits signals. Information-processing and information-transmitting element of nervous system. (around 100 billion neurons in nervous system)
- They're some of the longest-lived cells in your body
- They're irreplaceable
- They have huge appetites (about 25% of the calories that you take in everyday are consumed by your brain's activity)

They exist different kinds of neurons
- Multipolar Neurons (99% of neurons are multipolar)
- Bipolar (found only in few special sensory places like the retina of your eye)
- Unipolar (found mostly in sensory receptors)
Sensory neurons =
(Afferent neurons)
- Pick up messages and transmit impulses from sensory receptors (skin or internal organs) towards the CNS
- Most sensory neurons are Unipolar
Motor neurons =
(Efferent neurons)
- Do the opposite: transmit impulses away from the CNS and out to your body's muscles and glands
Interneurons =
(Association neurons)
- Live in the CNS and transmit impulses between those sensory and motor neurons
- They are the most abundant of your body's neurons

Relay interneurons = connect circuits of local interneurons in one region of the brain with those in other regions

Glial Cells (neuroglia) = surround and protect neurons. They provide support, nutrition, insulations and help with signal transmission in the nervous system
