STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT :
STAGE 5 :Advanced Fluency
students with the age of 4-10 years able to achieve cognitive academic language proficiency in English
they will be
near-native
(highly proficient speakers who are distinguishable from native speakers, but only in small ways) in their ability to perform in content area learning
ELLs have been exited from ESL and other support programs
they need a support from classroom teachers in some content areas such as history/social studies and writing
STAGE 2 : Early Production
last up to 6 months and students will develop (receptive & active vocab-1000 words)
students usually speak in 1/2 words phrases
they can use short language chunks that have been memorized (not always be used correctly)
STAGE 1 : Pre-production (Silent period)
last from a couple of days to several months
observed at the beginning of exposure to the new language
ESL beginners who used to listen but less speak in English able to show progress in second language development at the end of the day
eg
: talk to classmates in class
STAGE 3 : Speech Emergence
students developed vocab (3000 words)
they can use simple phrases and sentences when communicate
they tend to ask simple questions which are not grammatically correct
having short conversation with classmates
they are able to understand easy stories with supported pictures
the teacher help them doing some content work
*STAGE 4 :Intermediate Fluency
have 6000 active words vocab
use more complex sentences when speaking & writing
they can share their opinions and express their thoughts
they will ask questions to clarify what they learned
they able to work in grade level math and science classes & teacher supports
increase in comprehension of English literature and social studies content
they will used strategies from their native language to learn content in English
students used to make errors at this stage as they try to master the complexity of English grammar and also sentence structure
most of the students will used their native language to translate written assignments
the students expected to synthesize what they have learned and make inferences from their learning
this is a perfect time for teachers to focus on learning strategies
students able to understand more complex concepts
