Data Portability - SOUND AND VIDEO
MPEG
Moving Picture Experts Group
Wide portability and is played by most video players
It transmits only information about the pixels that have changed and uses MP3 for audio
This reduces the file size but is not suitable for fast moving, fast paced videos when each pixel changes often
MP4
Very portable and is played by nearly all video software
Designed for online streaming
Lossy compression but can maintain very high image quality
The default format used by mobile phones and digital cameras
MIDI
Not Portable
Musical Instrument Digital Interface
Digital signals are recorded and can be played back as a range of sampled audio sounds e.g. drum kit, paino, bass guitar, etc.
It does not actually sample sounds and therefore cannot be used to record singing or any form of real audio
WAV
Windows Audio Waveform
Very portable can be played by any audio software
Lossless compression and give a sound close to the original
Audio CDs use WAV files
Large files sizes means they are rarely used online
WMA
Fairly portable and will play on most audio devices but not all
Windows Media Audio
Microsoft developed to compete with MP3
Lossy compression and the amount of compression can be varied
AVI
Audio Video Interleave
Quite portable and can be played by most video software
Does not compress video and therefore keeps full quality
Can contain multiple streams such as multiple camera angles
Very high file sizes
MP3
Lossy compression and the amount of compression can be varied
Very portable can be played by any audio software
Small file size but excellent quality
