Atomic Theory Time-Line
Democritus
Democritus lived in Abdera, Greece.
Democritus discovered everything in the atmosphere is made of atoms. He adapted this theory from Leucippus.
Many writings mention Democritus and his personality, commonly describing him laughing gracing artists' works, all largely due to his disdain for human error.
James Chadwick (1891 - 1974)
Chadwick was born in the small town of Bollington, England UK.
In 1932, Chadwick that the core of the atom contained an uncharged particle, which he called the neutron. He made this discovery by using scattering data to calculate the mass of this neutral particle.
In 1911 when he graduated, he received first class honors.
Niels Bohr (1885 - 1962)
Bohr lived in Copenhagen, Denmark
Bohr discovered that electrons travel in separate orbits around the nucleus, and that the number of electrons in the outer orbit determines the properties of an element. He discovered this by revising Planck's quantum theory of radiation.
During the rise of the Nazis in Europe and the resulting World War II, Bohr was instrumental in helping Jewish scientists flee, securing them academic posts around the world.
JJ Thomson (1856 - 1940)
Thomson lived Cheetham Hill, an inner city in the area of Manchester, England.
In 1897, Thomson discovered the electron by experimenting with the nature of electric discharge in a high-vacuum cathode-ray tube.
Thompson's father was the owner of a third generation bookshop, and his mother came from a family who owned a cotton company.
John Dalton (1766 -1844)
Dalton was born in Eaglesfield, Cumberland, England and died in Manchester.
Dalton discovered that all mater was indivisible and indestructible. He discovered his theory from working on water vapor that could be absorbed by air at different temperatures. It was fitting that this law was used most often to correct for the amount of water vapor picked up when a gas is collected by displacing water.

Ernest Rutherford (1871 - 1937)
Rutherford lived in Nelson New England, Canada, and England.
In 1911, Rutherford theorized that atoms have their charge concentrated in a very small nucleus. He discovered the nucleus by shooting alpha particles at a sheet of gold foil, and he noticed that most went through, but some bounced back.
