Improving Communication 2.3
Important to have cultural sensitivity.
Prepare yourself
Learn about other cultures.
Don't let self esteem tear you down.
Face fears.
Reduce Ethnocentrism
I think America is better and more trustworthy than most countries. (Example)
We need to stop seeing people and places as superior or inferior.
Distortions or your own behaviors.
Confront Stereotypes
Humans all have the tendency to put people into groups and label them.
The best thing to do is stop stereotypes. Such as black people like watermelon. Or jewish people have huge noses.
Changing the fixed impression that has been passed on for years.
Barriers are made to be broken!
Be mindful!
You are in control you know what is going on and you understand.
Mindlessness is not something you want to accomplish, you are no longer aware.
Mental Awareness!
An example would be talking louder to a person that is deaf.
Recognize Differences
Notice the important distinctions!
Don't assume customs are the same. Americans eat tv dinners in the living room. Chinese people eat homemade meals at the table together.
Do not assume you only have similarities and no differences.
Adjust your Communication
Parents and children have different vocabulary.
The terms they both use can have different meanings.
Learn the signals your significant other uses.
If someone has a disability do not talk in third person or assume they can not understand you.
Recognize Culture Shock
College.
Marrying my significant other.
Occurs when we experience a different culture.
Four Stages: Honeymoon, Crisis, Recover, and Adjustment.
Fascination sets in then you discover the differences, finally we gain the skills that we need to move on, and finally we adjust and become familiar with the culture.
