Ageing population
Solutions
-
-
encourage active ageing (i.e. allow the able-bodied elderly to live in an age-friendly environment where they can stay healthy, active and independent)
e.g. of related measures:
- the establishment of elder academies
- launch of "$2 Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme"
- improvement of physical accessibility to buildings and public facilities
-
the government's funds
more financial assistance for the Hospital Authority (HA) --> strengthen healthcare services for the elderly and other patients, such as chronic disease management, rehabilitation support and service enhancement by HA’s Community Geriatric Assessment Teams for terminally ill patients living in residential care homes for the elderly
Current situation
there are currently about 1.12 million people aged 65 or above in Hong Kong, meaning that one in six persons is an elderly person
in 20 years, one-third of Hong Kong’s population will be aged 65 or above
there is also a higher incidence rate of chronic diseases and physical deterioration among the older people --> rising demand for RCS and CCS
with longer life expectancies, Hong Kong people’s retirement life can be as long as 20 to 30 years
-
Impacts
an increased proportion of older people living with
chronic disease(s) and physical deterioration has resulted in rising demand for long term care services for the elderly
the needs of an older population, coupled with fewer workers to pay taxes, will put a tremendous strain on Hong Kong’s public finances and facilities, including already deteriorating hospitals
