Tissue
Epithelial
Location
The walls of organs
Simple Columnar
Single layered column like cells some cillated; for protection secretion & absorption linings of uterus stomach, gallbladder and intestines
-
Stratified Squamous
Many layers of flattened cells; protects resists abrasion
epidermis of skin, oral cavity, esophagus
Simple Cuboidal
Single layer cube-shaped; secretion, absorption.
Surface of ovaries, linings of kidney tubes, ducts and glands
-
Stratified Columnar
Many layers of cells but only the surface cells are columnar; deeper layers are cubodial shaped in male urethra and phyarynx
Transitional Epithelium
Multiple layers of cells which appear cuboidal when not stretched, but squamous when stretched; found in the urinary organs
Simple Squamous
Air sacks of the lungs and the lining of the heart, blood vessels and lymphatic. Single thin layer; filtration, diffusion, secretion
Muscle
Skeletal Muscle
Striated, voluntary muscle found in the trunk in extremities of the body and is also attached to bone. It carries out tasks sent from brain/nervous system
Smooth Muscle
Not striated, not voluntary muscle that is found around most tube like organs. It helps food digest and moves thing through organs
Cardiac Muscle
Striated, not voluntary muscle found in the heart that keeps the heart beating and the blood moving through the body
Connective tissue
Cartilage
Elastic
Function: maintains the shape of a structure while allowing great flexibility
Location: supports external ear
-
Fibrocartilage
Function: tensile strength with the ability to absorb compressive shock
Location: inververtebral discs
Blood
Function: transport of respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, and other substances
Location: contained within blood vessels
-

Connective Tissue Proper
Recticular
Function: fibers form a soft internal skeleton that supports other cell types
Location: lymphoid organs
