- Serous: clear, watery, frothy. Usually due to acute pulmonary oedema, occasionally lung Ca
- Rusty: pneumococcal (lobar) pneumonia
- Mucoid: clear, white or grey. Occurs in asthma, chronic bronchitis & acute viral infections
- Mucopurulent/purulent sputum: yellow, green or brown - seen in all types of bronchopulmonary infection. Eosinophils can make sputum look purulent
