Global resources: Local Renewable Energy Scheme- Nepal
Energy insecurity
Lack of natural resources
no fossil fuels
Traditional use of wood has lead to deforestation
Mountainious and land-locked so hard to import fossil fuels
Energy demand increasing as the country develops
power cuts are common
Micro-Hydro plants
Funding and management
Funded by the world bank and government of Nepal
Managed by local community
benefits
Environmental
Less damaging to the environment that large scale HEP
Renewable
less risk of flooding
Social
Does not require relocation like large scale HEP
Electricity for homes, industry, agriculture and commerce
Boosts the economy e.g. new industries
How it works (Run-of-the-river)
The water runs steeply down hill to the turbine through a penstock pipe
A small turbine tuns which drives a generator to provide electricity
The river is channled from the river to a forebay tank
The forebay tank is a settling basin that removes damaging sediment
Example of Micro-hydro plant
Darbang (between Kathmandu and Tibet) - Ruma Khola micro-hydro since 2009
Supplies 700 households in 5 villages
Lead to new industries including furniture workshops, cement block maker and dairy farms
