How was printing done in China ?
In China printing was done through wood block printing or through hand printing the text
Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China through blocks
Woodblock printing three main methods of doing so:
STAMPING
PRINTING IN A PRESS
RUBBING
Apparently the most common for Far Eastern printing. The block is placed face side up on a table, with the paper or fabric on top. The back of the paper or fabric is rubbed with a "hard pad, a flat piece of wood, a burnisher, or a leather frotton".
COMPILATION OF BOOKS
Chinese used accordion books for compilation of the printed pages
It was invented to accommodate scrolls that had become unmanageable because of their size and length. The accordion book is composed of a continuous folded sheet of paper and is often enclosed between two covers. It can either be expanded outward or kept flat.
HAND PRINTING
It involved highly skilled craftsmen to duplicate text with remarkable accuracy through a method called "CALLIGRAPHY"
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful and stylised writing.

In china there used to be civil service examinations.
Textbooks for this examinations were printed in vast numbers under the sponsorship of imperial state.
From 16 century no. of people appearing in civil service examination increased up steadily.

By 19 century reading culture was accompanied with new technology .
Western printing techniques were imported.
17 CENTURY PRINTING CULTURE IN CHINA
A urban culture bloomed in China the print culture diversified.
Now it was not just used by scholars but by many officials.
Merchant now used it everyday to collect trade information
Reading increasingly became a leisure activity
The new readership preferred fictional narratives, poetry , etc.
Rich woman began to read
Many woman began publishing their poetry and plays
