pathology
crohn's disease: terminal ileum can't reabsorb bile sufficiently, lack of bile leads to diarrhea with the intake of dietary fat
bile duct obstruction: if bile backs up in the liver there will be increased heme/bilirubin in the blood (jaundice) and if no bile is getting to the intestines poop will be white (no stercobilin)
-
-
breakdown: stercobilin, one of the breakdown products of bilirubin, gives feces a brown color
-
concentration: the liver makes 1 liter of bile a day and the capacity of the gallbladder is 40-70 mL. The gallbladder reabsorbs water and electrolytes to concentrate bile.
