Path Exam 2 WQ
Normal Thymus:
- 3rd pharyngeal pouch - primary origin (4th may contribute)
- Ectopic in neck - pleura
- Prominent at birth - anterior mediastinum
- Grows from 10-35 gm to 50 gm until puberty
- Involutes post-puberty to small size
- 2 fused loves

Thymic Hyperplasia
- B-cell follicles w/ germinal centers
Associated with:
Autoimmune Disease

Collagen vascular disease
-
Thymomas
- Tumors of spindle-shaped thymic epithelial cells
- Adults, >40 yo
- Asymptomatic, seen on imaging or with CV surgery
- Pressure symptoms
Associated with these Paraneoplastic Syndromes:

- Uni or Bilateral ptosis
- Weakness when chewing

Types of Thymomas
- Benign cytologically noninvasive
- Benign cytologically invasive (metastasis possible)
- Thymic carcinoma - cytologically malignant
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma assoc. w/ EBV in 50%
