dissertation

tentative structure

Mind as pattern making system - Transfer of meaning

Development of "code"

Externalizing the patterns (create a diagram)

Comparison of medium (the container of expression)

Condensing the concept into a word

Different ways of externalizing the pattern

language

art

architecture

Example: Lets say I want to communicate the concept God

Language

Art

word: "the lord is my shepard

visual: the-creation-of-adam

Architecture

experiential and social: jubilee church

the container (mode of expression) is made up of a set of "rules".

Each container has a intrinsic system which governs the way meaning is transferred.

therefore each medium has a certain "code"

meaning is form

the meaning depends on the form or "code" of the container

example in language: the syntax conditions the meaning

state of understanding depends on form

form is structure

literal

non-literal

everyday language

drawing a direct literal representation

metaphor

design process

externalizing the patterns - transfer of meaning

just like language is a tool to communicate and externalize the patterns in our mind instantaneously. could a tool be created for one to learn how to transfer the conceptual patterns in our mind into architecture efficiently ?

updates to structure

preconcept (why am i doing this/justification of research)

how am i doing this?

by metaphorically manoeuvring my way through the process

describing the metaphoric process by documenting the process

showing how i can control and swerve direction of thoughts

making the un-linkable, linkable has a lot of value to the architect as a creative person who is in control of transforming the intangible into the tangible whilst dealing with seemingly unlinkable data

not just throughout the design process but also at the end in its physical manifestation.

each chapter is tracing the evolution of meaning throughout the design process - showing how playing with words is no different than playing with lines and sketches

showing how form in reality runs parallel to form in thoughts

therefore apart from the dissertation documenting my process it is in parallel tracing the evolution of meaning throughout the design process.

one of the biggest problems, questions or doubts about architecture is the ineffable (it is too great or extreme to describe in words). it is not logic you can reapply tomorrow. it is a lot about perception. this means that the works value depends on the context in which it is read. through my dissertation i aim at demonstrating how metaphor is a tool to navigate this ever changing process.

contrast the dynamic of reality with the static freeze frame effect of language.

does metaphor allow us to bridge the dynamic of reality with "frozen" representation in language ( be it linguistic, art or architecture).

how can the expression be as dynamic as reality?

showing understanding is just a matter of organisation.

and the metaphor is a tool for arrangement

its a matter of constant organisation and re-organisation of data

what are the benefits of this?

organisation

tentative structure

pre-concept

how am I doing this?

testing

by going through the metaphoric process

apocalypse project - understanding the shifts in organization (meaning) along the way.

understanding what triggers changes in meanings

what provocations trigger a change in meaning

compare the metaphoric thought process to the dynamic map

analogy of the map - alfred korzybski/jean dissertation

definition of metaphor

it is essentially the way we think - therefore understanding it and documenting it should help understand how to control the organization and re-organization of thoughts

comparing to the design process

really understanding changing meaning along the way

metaphor is organizing

understanding what provokes organisation

showing how meaning with words is no different to playing with lines and sketches.

metaphor deals with some sort of structural similarity - the mapping won't occur otherwise

words are symbols - abstractions of some aspect of reality.

"consciousness of abstracting"

architectural language should have a structural similarity similar to the meaning we want to convey

mapping

what provocations trigger a re-organization

demonstrating the tool

tests

documentation of the metaphoric process

chapters based on the design process - tracing the evolution of meaning

mapping is a process of abstracting our experiences of reality

comparing it to the design process

showing the structural similarity

words

art

architecture

what distinguishes a better map from a poorer one is the degree to which they have structural similarity to the underlying reality.

  1. the creative thought process
  1. finding form in reality

architectural language should have a structural similarity to the meaning you want to convey - evidence of this is when you when you see a building and it just doesn't seem right to you or vice versa, you look at a building and it makes complete sense

imagine the strange feeling one would get if they tasted food which was labelled as salty and it was actually sweet

a dynamic map for the dynamic reality

the map need to constantly re-organize itself to match the terrain

understanding the map-territory relationship

  1. testing
  1. demonstrating metaphor as a tool
