The black body starting with the ever so problematic H&M
H&M released this ridiculous sweatshirt that has
"coolest monkey in the jungle"
slapped across the front in 2018 and received an immense amount of backlash for it.
This ad took over twitter in the early months of 2018. Many big names announced their end to collaborating with H&M. What's interesting about this situation was the mother's reaction. She told people to "get over it" on her social media. Her instagram tag is now
kingofthejungle81
to mock those who were offended.
This meme, though it happened later in the year, is a perfect example of how the black body is deemed animalistic.
Herald Sun's cartoon artist, Mark Knight, is nowhere near sorry for this racist cartoon. He was thrilled with this work and attacked those who called out his blatant racism.

In 2012 Manchesters striker, Mario Balotelli, was featured in this racist cartoon comparing him to King Kong. The creator,Valerio Marini, was let off the hook on behalf of Gazzetta Della Sport (the magazine that published it). They said they were sorry to those who they offended but those who are accusing them of racism are going overboard because they've done more than enough to fight racism. lol.
This 2008 Vogue cover was not an innocent action. The relationship between the two photos is uncanny. A spokesperson for Vogue stated they were "celebrating two superstars at the top of their game"

.
Not only does this play off of the narrative that the black body is animalistic but it highlights the idea that black men pray on white women.
Martin Luther King Jr was sent this anonymous letter in 1964. In this letter an anonymous troll commentated on MLK Jr's alleged sex scandal. In this letter he was called multiple things including a "beast", a "monster", and a "filthy, abnormal animal".
Published in 1901, "The Negro a Beast is a complete rejection of Darwinian evolution. The book then attempts to produce "biblical and scientific evidence" that Blacks were not descended from Adam, and are not part of the human family. Miscegenation (inter-racial breeding), the book claims, produces beasts without souls and is the reason God decided that his Son had to be sacrificed--to save the world from the sins of man's amalgamation with Negroes. Carroll even suggests that Blacks were "the tempter of Eve"." (

Francis Galton, Darwin's cousin, had a lot to say about black people. He often compared them to apes.
Types of Mankind, published in 1854 by Josiah C. Nott. Nott rejected Darwin's evolution theory and created his own. He basically said black people were a mixture of Greek and ape.
“Are but little removed, both in moral and physical characters, from the orangutan. They are not black, but of a yellowish-brown with woolly heads, diminutive statures, small ill-shape crania, very projection mouths, prognathous faces, and badly formed bodies; in short they are described by travelers as bearing a strong resemblance to the monkey tribe.” (224) (

In Frederick Douglass's Narrative he explains at length the horror that the slaves were subjected to. He mentioned how the slaves were put on the same social level as the animals were. “There were horses and men, cattle and women, pigs and children, all holding the same rank in the scale of being” (1844)
Here's a quote from Darwin. Racism seems to run in the family.
The Leopard's Spots
by Thomas Dixon Jr. was published in 1901. This was the beginning of a three part KKK series. As you can imagine this book is riddled with racial slurs. Here's an excerpt, "Every time I'd go into battle and hear them Minie balls begin to sing over us, it seemed to me I could see their
black ape faces
grinnin'
and makin' fun of poor whites. At night when they'd detail me to help the ambulance corps carry off the dead and the wounded, there was a strange smell on the field that came from the blood and night damp and burnt powder. It always smelled like a nigger to me! It made me sick. Yes, Preacher, God forgive me, I hate 'em! I can't help it any more than I can the color of my skin or my hair." (28, 29 Dixon)

Dixon's second novel in this series was published in 1905.
The Clansmen
was a message to the Northerners on segregation. The description of black people did not change. Here's another excerpt, "Phil watched him with disgust. He had the short, heavy-set neck of the lower order of animals. His skin was coal black, his lips so thick they curled both ways up and down with crooked blood marks across them. His nose was flat, and its enormous nostrils seemed in perpetual dilation. The sinister bead eyes, with brown splotches in their whites, were set wide apart and gleamed apelike under his scant brows. His enormous cheekbones and jaws seemed to protrude beyond the ears and almost hide them." (216)(

In 1931,
Tintin In the Congo
was published. In this children's book African's were all given similar faces, eliminating any personality. A monkey was presented in the book and he was given the same amount of intelligence as the Africans.
Similar to Tintin, Dr. Dolittle, published in 1920, had similar visuals of Black people. Their features were enlarged and animalistic.

In 1904, Ota Benga was placed in a Human zoo exhibit and then in to the Bronx Zoo
After Tiger Woods' scandal he was featured on the cover of Vanity Fair in 2010. Due to his sex scandal he was no longer allowed to obtain his angelic reputation. He is now seen as a brute. Before this scandal you would never see him photographed like this.
2013 the song
Blurred Lines
came out. This incredibly inappropriate song rightfully so received backlash. The interesting part about this is Robin Thicke was the only one to receive it. T.I. and Pharell were left out of this. Why? They're black men. This is their nature.
I was disturbed after reading an article form theawl.com. This article cited chimpout.com in 2011. chimpout.com had a lot to say about the Obamas. They commented on this saying "we think too highly of apes than to seriously compare them to blacks."
After Malia Obama announced she'd be attending Harvard after graduating high school, according to addictinginfo.com, Fox News fans attacked the poor girl via comments. She was called many things including a monkey and an ape.
in 2016 Ellen DeGeneres was accused of being a racist after posting a meme of her riding on the back of Usain Bolt. Twitter threw rocks at Ellen. She was accused of comparing Bolt to a mule, a horse, or property.

In May of 2018, Roseanne Barr viciously tweeted about Valerie Jarrett. As a result of her actions her ABC show was immediately cancelled.
She blamed her racist outburst on sedatives. The creator of Ambien reacted by saying "racism isn't a side effect" (
