Secondary Storage
Magnetic
The storage of data on a magnetized medium. Magnetic storage uses different patterns of magnetisation in a magnetisable material to store data and is a form of non-volatile memory. The information is accessed using one or more read/write heads.
-
Very durable, it can last for years if treated carefully.
An external hard disk used for backing up data is portable as it comes in various pocket-sized or larger cases, but it is larger than a DVD or USB memory stick.
The disk spins at high speed, a typical hard-disk drive operates at a speed of 7,200 rpm (rotations per minute)
A typical internal hard drive for a new computer has a storage capacity of several hundred gigabytes (GB) up to 1 terabyte (TB).
-
Flash
Flash memory is an electronic (solid-state) non-volatile computer storage medium that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed.
-
-
Flash drives are very portable as they are pocket size/ smaller and can usually be attached to keychains etc.
This drive has a write speed of 60 MB/s and a read speed of 120 MB/s, making it faster than the USB 2.0 standard.

Optical
Optical storage is the storage of data on an optically readable medium. Data is recorded by making marks in a pattern that can be read back with the aid of light, usually a beam of laser light precisely focused on a spinning optical disc.

Writing a DVD at 1X (1,385,000 bytes per second) is approximately 9 as fast as writing a CD at 1X (153,600 bytes per second).
Cloud
Cloud storage is a virtual storage type where documents, photos etc are stored elsewhere but can be accessed and downloaded back onto your device.
-
It is very durable as it is stored elsewhere so even if you lose your device, you can still access your stuff by logging onto it via another device.
-
The speed is very quick. For Dropbox, an example of a cloud storage type, it is 22.5 Mbps to upload a file to the server and to download it only takes 20 Mbps.
The cost is quite cheap. On average, 2GB would be free and for 5GB it would be aroun £0.79/per month
It can store endless amounts of data. Cureently, it hold over 1 Exabyte (1 billion GB)
