Characteristics
Emotional:
- Anxiety
- Emotional responses like fear and anxiety are unreasonable in comparison to the stimuli.
Cognitive:
- Focus on stimulus.
- Irrational beliefs.
- Cognitive distortions of phobia.
Behavioural:
- Panic
- Avoidance
- Endurance
Behavioural Explanation
Mowrer's (1960) Two Process Model - acquisition via classical conditioning and maintenance via operant conditioning.

Evaluation:
- Strength: Explains why patients need to have exposure to phobia in therapy.
- Limitation: Avoidance may be motivated by positive feeling of safety. Buck (2010) - suggests why agoraphobics can leave their houses with trusted people.
- Limitation: Bounton (2007) play a part. Seligman (1971) - most phobias are to do with things that were dangerous to us in the past, like snakes. It is adaptive to have fears like this, this is called 'biological preparedness'.
