Psychosexual stages
2nd stage: The Anal stage
Occurs between the ages 1 and a half and 2 and a half.
This is when children learn they can control their bodily functions.
The general issue of self-control becomes a vital issue.
Conflicts during this stage cna lead to different personality traits during adulthood.
Anal-retentive: excessive use of self-control. -> perfectionism and excessive needs for order and cleanliness.
Anal-expulsive: less restrained, more messy and careless
1st stage: The oral stage
Infants explore their worlds through putting things in their mouths
Their first form of pleasure is eating.
A child whose caretaker does not meet their needs during the first stage may become fixated on the oral stage. Ex: smoking, overeating, excessive talking, nail biting, etc.
3rd stage: The Phallic stage
Age 3. Boys and girls discover the differences between their bodies, and become more focused on themselves.
They may develop stronger feelings for their parent of the opposite gender and may feel like their other parent is competing for affection.
Freud argued that the complex emotions of this stage may lead to psychological disorders in the future like anxiety, depression, and excessive guilt.
4th stage: The Latency stage
Age 5 or 6
After years of conflict with their parents, a childs feelings are now hidden.
They repress all aggressive urges. Impulses and emotions remain hidden of unconscious.
