Psalm 44 by a maskil by the sons of Korah: Come to our help
(Trust in God's save)
recall the memory of Israel history
their fathers told them; having heard with our ears
what the deeds God performed in their days, in the days of old
contrasting
YOU drove out the nations with Your own hand vs YOU planted them (Israel?)
YOU afflicted the peoples vs set (Israel?) free
GOD's mighty and awesome deeds for Israel
they won the land not by their own sword
we tread down those who rise up against us through Your name
we push down our foes through YOU
their own arm did not save them
But YOU have saved us from our foes and have put those who hate them, to shame
nor my sword can save me
I do not trust in my bow
reasons
For You delighted in them
salvation ordain for Jacob
But because of Your right hand and Your arm, and the light of Your face
But, God
YOU have rejected us and disgraced us
all day long my disgrace is before me
shame has covered my face at the sound of taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger
YOU have not gone out with our armies
YOU have made us turn back from the foe
YOU have made us like sheep for slaughter
Yet, for Your sake, we are killed all the day long
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered
YOU have scattered us among the nations
YOU have sold Your people for a trifle, demanding no price for them
YOU have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us
YOU have made us a byword among the nations, a laughing stock among the peoples
Yet, You have broken us in the place of jackals
You have covered us with the shadow of death
Response to God
now
"You are my King, Oh God"
confront and ask
Awake! O Lord, why are You sleeping?
rouse Yourself!
rise up, come to our Help!
redeem us for the sake of Your steadfast love
do not reject us forever!
why do You hide Your face?
why do You forget our affliction and oppression?
for our soul is bowed down to the dust
our belly clings to the ground
past
we have boasted continuously in God
All these have come upon us, though we have not forgotten YOU
we have not been false to Your covenant
Our heart has not turned back
Nor have our steps departed from Your way
if we have forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign God, would not God discover this? For HE knows the secrets of the heart
future
we will give thanks to Your name forever (v8)
