Structure of a Long Bone

Periosteum
Covers bone and is the attachment point for muscles, tendons, and ligaments
Epiphysis
Ends of the bone where the compact bone encloses the spongy bone, contains red bone marrow, and is covered by hyaline cartilage

Diaphysis
Shaft of bone which is covered with periosteum and contains Medullary Cavity filled with yellow bone marrow

Types of bones:
Short Bones
Square or cube shaped
Ex: carpals, tarsals, and patella
Flat Bones
Flat, thin bones often curved
Ex: scapula, skull, ribs, and sternum

Odd, irregular shapes
Ex: pelvis, vertebrae, coccyx, and hip
