Rehabilitation (prison) - reduce recidivism
prisoner paying for own
food and bed by working
Drop-in centers for after release “check-ins”, to help adapt former prisoners into society
R$21,000/Prisoner→ R$15,000/Student → investment per prison should decrease
80% of prisoners that leave prison return to commit more crimes
Investment from private companies
Simple jobs
If you don’t work you starve (or maybe penintenciary still receives tax)
No salaries for prisoners, money goes directly to penintenciary (or not, sounds like slavery)
LAO (Legislative Analyst’s Office) recommendations to improve the rehabilitation process
“We recommend establishing a review committee to select the assessment tools most effective at determining which inmates are the highest‑risk to recidivate and have the highest‑need for rehabilitation programs to address those needs”
Create workshops to ensure rehanilitation
Example of this potentially working

Expanding initial ideas
Goal: Renovate incarceration in Brazil
What are we doing to achieve?
Decrease taxes that pay prison maintenance, encourage prisoners to work in order to help pay for their food and bedding. Work can vary from agricultural work to customer service attendance. Prisoners should still be included in ergonomic laws and evaluations.
More money left for other departments of government, such as education
Prisoners become more active in societal activities, they have to work in order to pay the ratio of their common needs → spare money will be given back at the end of incarceration period which will also motivate them to work
A way for prisoners to exercise, get out of the cell, have contact with the outside civilians
A bad consequence that may happen: A prisoner refuses to work and therefore cannot pay his ratio of the common needs prison offers. They will starve and this would not be humanitarian.
Make the reintegration of the prisoner into society easier, offering job opportunities during his stay in prison.
Decrease in the number of people that commit crimes right after leaving jail
Make the economy stronger, as it does not loose potential workers after they leave the jail for prejudicial matters
Motivate the prisoner to be useful for the economy during his stay in prison, where he would otherwise be of no use to society
Reduce the rates of depression in prison
→ “You invest yourself in work, it opens prospects. It’s extremely important to give us responsibilities, that proves we can be recognized, we become more credible.” (CD inmate, 35, 13th year in prison)
Reduce the crime rates (by knowing they will need to work for their stay in prison, potential criminals may think twice before committing a crime)
Establish a review committee to give greater assistance to prisoners with higher needs and risks
Less harm towards employees that work together with prisoners
Improve equity in workshops and jobs → more accessible to those that need more attention/demand
