BOOK AS HUMAN MIND and GLASS AS NOTHING are both metaphors. How the artist related the two metaphors together is another metaphor. the glass is nothing until the book is intersecting. once the books are seen intersecting the glass is transformed from nothing (emptiness) to something tangible. the nothing is now elevated to something which is of value to the human character/mind.
the difference between linguistics and art is that there is no set "code" of understanding like in linguistics. "GLASS" has a frame of properties which makes it what it is just like the word "SHEPARD". But Glass in itself is not there to communicate meaning. The material is elevated to have meaning through the creativity of the artist.

the lord is my shepard, I shall not want - Psalms 23:1
LORD = SHEPARD
in language our tool to communicate and express is speech and speech is made up of words. therefore the mapping must occur from one word to another where each word signifies a different concept.
the word "SHEPARD" has one meaning - a code which we use to symbolise a person which falls under the frame of "SHEPARD". so when someone uses the word "SHEPARD" it instantly communicates everything which falls within the understood framework of "SHEPARD". the linguistic code is rigid.
